A Literary History of the Novel in African Languages

Project Description

The novel in Africa predated European advent into the continent and flourished remarkably in some indigenous African languages, yet hardly have there been full scale studies on its evolution and history in those languages--Amharic, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Xhosa, Oromo, Tigrinya, Ndebele, Swahili, Efik etc. This project starts with a survey of novels published in African Languages and progresses to studies of the evolution and history in selected individual African languages.

Work Description

Web search, compilation and documentation of novels published in selected African languges,  Acquisition, Indexing, and inventory of novels at national and regional levels. Organization and typing of data. Proof-reading of manuscripts, essential correspondence with archival libraries (Library of Congress, School of Oriental and African Languages (SOAS), London University, University of Ibadan, Nigeria library, Institute of Nigerian Languges, Aba, other  identified institutes of African Languages in Africa and eslewhere, etc.

Requirements Description

Previous experience as research assistant preferred.
